• Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) at Pennsbury School District

    What is PBIS?

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive framework designed to improve student behavior and build a positive school culture. It emphasizes teaching and reinforcing expected behaviors, creating consistent behavioral expectations, and providing support systems to encourage positive behaviors. PBIS is part of the broader MTSS model, focusing specifically on behavioral and social-emotional development to ensure all students feel supported, safe, and ready to learn.

How is PBIS Implemented in Pennsbury?

At Pennsbury, PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) is implemented within the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework to proactively foster a predictable, consistent, positive, and safe environment for all students. Through this approach, clear behavioral expectations are communicated, taught, and reinforced school-wide. For students needing additional support, targeted interventions are provided to address specific social-emotional or behavioral needs, and individualized support is available for those facing more significant challenges. This tiered structure ensures that every student can access appropriate guidance and reinforcement.

A key component of PBIS in Pennsbury is the collection and use of behavioral data. Universal screeners and regular progress monitoring allow teachers and staff to identify students' strengths and areas for growth, ensuring interventions are timely and targeted. Student behavioral data helps guide decisions about how to teach, reinforce, and adjust PBIS strategies, enabling Pennsbury staff to implement support that is responsive to the changing needs of our students.

Collaboration among teachers, counselors, and administrators is central to PBIS, as teams regularly review data to monitor progress and refine interventions. To strengthen PBIS, Pennsbury incorporates Responsive Classroom and Restorative Practices by building community and addressing conflicts in constructive ways. Responsive Classroom methods, such as morning meetings, structured routines, and positive behavior modeling foster a warm, positive, and inclusive learning environment. Restorative Practices support accountability and relationship-building through restorative conversations and circles, helping students learn from conflicts and repair harm done. Together, these approaches help ensure that Pennsbury students receive the comprehensive support needed for positive social-emotional and behavioral development.

How Can Families Help Support PBIS?

Families play an essential role in supporting PBIS at home and in the school community. By reinforcing the school's behavioral expectations at home, encouraging positive interactions, and supporting social-emotional learning, families can help students thrive within the PBIS framework. Communicating with teachers about progress or behavioral challenges, attending school events, and joining PBIS-related activities also strengthens the home-school connection, ensuring students receive consistent support. Students and families are encouraged to reach out to their school’s PBIS team to learn more about PBIS initiatives and how they can get involved.
