Every year, the Pennsbury School District teams with the Bucks County Intermediate Unit #22 (BCIU #22) to meet with parents and guardians of preschool students who are receiving services through an Early Intervention Individualized Education Program (IEP) and will be of kindergarten age by the start of the following school year. 

Early Intervention to School-Age Transition Meetings typically are planned throughout the months of January and February of each school year. These meetings are scheduled through collaboration between the BCIU #22 and the Pennsbury School District. In attendance at these transition meetings:  The school district’s supervisor of Early Intervention transitions, designated personnel from the school district’s special education office, a speech/language pathologist and/or a school psychologist, depending on the services that child is currently receiving. A representative from the BCIU #22 will also be in attendance to help to facilitate the transition process. 

The purpose of the transition meeting is to help families become acclimated to the process and procedures involved with moving from a preschool level of services to a school age level of services. Parents will be provided with instructions on registering their children for school in the fall of the upcoming school year, along with information and material on helping to understand the transition process. Meetings typically last 20-30 minutes. Meetings are for students who meet the minimum age requirement to enter kindergarten at the start of the 2022-2023 school year.  

After the transition meeting concludes, parents will be in communication with the supervisor of transitions to help plan for a successful transition into kindergarten. During this process of working closely with parents, an evaluation process will be planned for and will take place prior to the start of the new school year. The evaluation process (to help to determine a child’s eligibility and need to receive special education and related service programming in kindergarten) will take up to 60 days to conclude. Should a child qualify for special education and related services following the evaluation process, an IEP meeting will be held.
